In my signature Birdseye view, San Francisco unfolds as a layered
topographic map — water, parks, neighborhoods, and streets weaving
together into a living urban grid. The silhouette of the Golden Gate Bridge
anchors the horizon, while steep, crooked streets reveal fleeting views of the
bay, the ocean, and the city at every turn.
Transport icons trace the rhythm of the city — historic cable cars, streetcars
inspired by systems in Melbourne, Lisbon, and Chicago, and even driverless
cars hinting at a rapidly changing future.
Neighborhoods such as the Mission, Chinatown, North Beach, and downtown
emerge through their rich architecture, while quieter details appear
throughout the painting — including the first fortune cookie factory and the
city flower, the Dahlia.
Four local birds take their place in the composition, led by the much-loved
cherry-headed conures (red-masked parakeets). Originally from Ecuador
and northern Peru, these vibrant birds are now an unmistakable part of San
Francisco’s urban wildlife, especially around Telegraph Hill and Coit Tower.
Floating above the city is a small aircraft carrying an advertising banner
reading “Keep It Golden” — a familiar sight from my San Francisco days and
a tribute to a resilient city shaped by earthquakes, booms and busts, and
more recent challenges.
Filled with layers, landmarks, and personal moments, this painting becomes
a map not just of a city, but of memory and belonging.
