A Portrait of Heritage and Modernity
This painting encapsulates the vibrant heart of South Bombay, the
southernmost precinct of Greater Mumbai, a place where wealth,
heritage, and culture converge to form one of India’s most captivating
urban landscapes.
South Bombay, India’s wealthiest urban precinct, boasts a
breathtaking skyline and some of the highest property values globally.
Its architectural heritage is unmatched, home to two UNESCO World
Heritage Sites—the iconic Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and a
celebrated collection of Victorian and Art Deco buildings. In fact,
South Bombay has the world’s second-largest collection of Art Deco
structures, surpassed only by Miami. This artistic tribute dedicates an
entire row to these architectural marvels, spotlighting iconic theaters
like Regal, Eros, and Liberty, historic commercial buildings like New
India Assurance, and characteristic apartments scattered across the
precinct.
As you explore the canvas, you’ll encounter beloved landmarks like
Kala Ghoda, Wankhede Stadium, Flora Fountain, the Hanging
Gardens, and Chowpatty, as well as the renowned Irani cafés serving
their classic Bun Maska. The painting also reveals South Bombay’s
lesser-known charms: Kotachiwadi, a quaint heritage village with
Portuguese-style homes, and the Tower of Silence, a unique structure
central to the Parsi community’s funerary customs.
Through this piece, I’ve sought to capture the grandeur, rich history,
and enduring spirit of South Bombay—a district where legacy and
modernity thrive in remarkable harmony.
