Where history, heritage and community come alive
Malleshwaram holds a special place in my heart—it’s not just a
neighborhood but my current home in Bangalore, where my parents
reside. Exploring every corner of this vibrant area has been a pure joy,
revealing layers of history and charm that never cease to fascinate me.
Malleshwaram embodies the essence of old Bangalore: its bustling
markets are alive with the aromas of fresh South Indian delicacies, the
rich scent of filter coffee, and the fragrance of vibrant flowers. From
the lively vegetable and flower markets to the soothing hymns drifting
from its temples, every visit is a feast for the senses. This
neighborhood, steeped in history since the 16th century, takes its
name from the revered Kadu Mallesha Temple, a spiritual anchor to
this day. One of Bangalore’s earliest planned areas, Malleshwaram is a
tapestry of tradition, with its many temples, including the mystical
Nandishwara Temple, which was hidden underground for centuries
before its rediscovery in 1997.
In this painting, I’ve tried to capture both the rich history and the
everyday life that makes Malleshwaram so unique. Iconic eateries like
Central Tiffin Room (CTR), Veena Stores, Janatha Hotel, and Sri
Raghavendra Stores serve timeless South Indian classics, offering
flavors that are deeply woven into the fabric of the community. I’ve
also included beloved landmarks like Sankey Tank, a peaceful retreat
for morning walks and quiet reflections, and the bustling shopping
streets of Margosa and Sampige, named after the Neem and Magnolia
Champaca trees that line them.Other highlights include the distinctive
Chowdaiah Memorial Hall, shaped like a violin, and the snake stones
nestled beneath Neem and Peepal trees, symbolizing fertility and their
sacred connection to Hindu deities.
My signature birds make an appearance here too: the Great
Cormorant, the Brahmini Kite, the energetic Common Mynah, and the
fascinating Flying Fox around Sankey Tank—all contributing to the
rhythm and life of this neighborhood. Through this painting, I invite
you to see Malleshwaram as I do—a place where the past and present
coexist harmoniously, blending tradition with transformation in every
street, temple, and tree.
